Box of Rain

Thirteen years off the stage changed nothing about it.
Hollow marks: the other 49 scored songs · Hatched band: the Crossover Zone
The case
The strongest honest argument for each side, then the ruling.
The Garcia argument
It was sung by a bassist who rarely sang lead, and the live versions show it: the tempo wanders and the vocal blend shifts across 163 listed performances. The song disappeared after 1973 and came back in 1986 with a different band sound, and it was still itself.
The Lennon argument
The song is written through, with a long winding chord sequence that leaves no natural place to open a solo section and a strict fit between lyric and melody. Lesh wrote the music complete and Hunter set words to it. The performances after 1986 follow the 1970 arrangement closely. It was the last song the band ever played, on 9 July 1995, and they played it as written.
The verdict: GLI 85
Nearly all of it was decided at the writing desk, and thirteen years off the stage changed nothing. It ranks above Ripple because its form is more intricate and has been altered less, and below the Beatles' studio pieces because no single recording is needed to know it.
