While My Guitar Gently Weeps

The lead guitar that defines the record was played by a guest.

The case
The strongest honest argument for each side, then the ruling.
The Garcia argument
The first take is Harrison alone with an acoustic guitar, with a verse the album version does not have. The remake six weeks later is a different arrangement. The lead guitar that gives the record its character was played by Eric Clapton, a guest, in his own style. The song has two legitimate forms and its signature part was not written by its author.
The Lennon argument
Harrison wrote a complete song: melody, lyric and a descending chord sequence that both versions follow. The album version took 28 takes of a planned arrangement, and Clapton's guitar was processed by hand at the mix to get a particular sound. The band never played it live.
The verdict: GLI 71
A finished composition that proved it could change clothes. Its identity is in the writing, which is why it survives both versions. The improvised lead and the documented alternate keep it in the low seventies.
